America fought from its earliest days to be free and self-governing. The idea of British control was a source of trouble for Colonial America. The taxes, were seen as unfair and the British Government was viewed as oppressive. Colonial America had a lot in common with the slaves that existed after the American Revolution. So, even though at the onset of the Civil War slavery was not the source of conflict, the Civil War was America's second revolution. The American Revolution was fought to gain freedom from Britain (1). At the onset of the Civil War the Federal Government did not want to interfere with slavery in the South but that would soon change becoming the focal point of the war (1). In both wars freedom was the agenda. Freedom from Britain for Colonial America and Freedom from bondage for the slave (1). Lincoln conveys this point in his Gettysburg Address (4). Lincoln starts by stating “that all men are created equal” (4), this was the sentiment in early America as individuals felt Britain was treating the colonies unfairly (1). He mentions also the dead and how their cause is what is leading America into a new type of freedom (4). He views the Civil War as a new birth for a nation that was founded on liberty (4). This was the same type of sentiment during the American Revolution (1). The American Revolution was fought to bring about a nation the world had never previously seen (1). The Civil War, much like the American Revolution, shaped a New America
