After World War Two, the American economy produced an increasing annual GDP every year and reached over $1 trillion by 1970. The growth that the rise in GDP caused led to a 25 percent increase in the real income of Americans. As a result of the increased income, Americans felt secure about their futures and became eager to spend their earnings (Henretta, Hinderaker, Edwards, & Self, 2015, p.764). During the postwar economy, Americans experienced a wide expansion in the consumer market also. The expansion could be compared to that of the 1920s when a plentiful variety of new products hit the consumer market.
