Louis was the last king of France (1774–92) and executed for treason. So as the 18th century drew to a close, France’s costly involvement in the American Revolution and the extravagant spending by King Louis XVI left France in debt. He gave high taxes and so the taxes placed on the people were unfair. The third estate had to pay most of the taxes which were placed by the kings. Outraged the people tired of being suppressed by the King wanted change. After the revolution had ended Napoleon I had taken over France, he was a French military leader and became an emperor. A man fighting wars constantly their borders and across the world was not so great for France. On the upside France had won battles, controlled the people, placed laws for a better education. France was in huge debt because of the war they had been involved in. The king reacted by placing high taxes on the 3rd estate. The third estate was made up of peasant farmers, and the middle class . The Third Estate was 96% of the population but owned less then 70% of the land. The peasants who had a hard life had now had to live an even harder life causing dissatisfaction with the government. After the French Revolution ended the idea of three ‘estates’ was abolished, as were noble and church privileges. Nobility had completely ended, and church lands were nationalized and sold, causing a full tenth of all land in France to change hands.
