From 1920 to 1933, the 18th amendment was an addition to the U.S constitution that made alcohol illegal to produce and be sold. Reformers thought that the 18th amendment would be an improvement but backfired as the rate of crimes increased. Along with the increase in crimes the corruption of that era had brought bribery to officers to stop enforcing the 18th amendment. During this period the economy dropped significantly. I believe the major cause of the prohibition was to lower crime rate. Instead of lowering crime rate it rose. Rum runners would smuggle alcohol from Canada and sell it throughout the states. Also people would bring alcohol to places such as blind pigs, which are private clubs, bars, and roadhouses that distributed illegal alcohol. Policemen and reformers would be bribed to not interfere with the illegal activities. Many people would make illegal alcohol, and sell it illegally. The intention of the 18th amendment was to increase the sales of other products. Stores, restaurants, and bars could not stay in business without selling liquor. Many people lost their jobs because of this. Because of this the government would not be getting tax money. When people drink alcohol people act differently. Violence against women and children was the result of people drinking alcohol. Many people believed this so many reformers worked towards making the 18th amendment. This I believe was improved when the 18th amendment took place. With all these causes to why the 18th amendment was made it should have been an improvement. Except many disobeyed this amendment. Instead decreasing crime it increased. Instead of sales going up in other products they went down. So I believe that the repeal was an
