Abigail Adams wrote her son, John Quincy Adam, in the year 1780 and it was eight years before the ratification of the constitution While John Quincy Adams was traveling overseas with his father, who was a U.S diplomat before he was elected as president. Abigail Adams was not aware that her son would become the next president, she writes to convince her son to travel with caution. In the letter, Abigail applies a worrisome tone, historical allusion and syntax to help communicate the significance of reaching a the highest potential on natural talent. To start off, Adams promotes caution towards her son's travel by going to his adoration toward her. She starts the letter with “my dear son” to signify that she is loves him and that this letter will do no harm towards him. Abigail Adams then continues in the letter that her main concern for him is to provide precaution toward his journey on the ocean, appealing to his emotion, allowing him to be open minded about her advice.
