What is gender expectation? The answer to this question may depend on the type of gender roles you were exposed to as a child. Gender expectation can be defined as the behavior and attitude expected from a female and a male member of a society by that society. Meaning the group of people that are around you demonstrate how you should act. Right when a child is born people tend to associate them by color. For example blue for a boy and pink for a girl. As a child is growing they are taught how to behavior and what is expected out of them. Women are expected to have jobs like becoming a teacher, a nurse, or even a maid because they are more nurturing and caring for others. For these types of jobs women don’t really have to take a lot of math courses. In “When Bright Girls Decide That Math Is ‘a Waste of Time’” by Susan Jacoby she explains how a girl named Susannah is a senior in high school that doesn’t want to take math and science. She told her parents that she was going to stop taking math and science courses because the career she wanted didn’t need them. Some women think that men are unattractive to women that are well educated. In traditional beliefs people associated math and science to be masculine subjects. In another case by Tracey Lien called “Why are women leaving the tech industry in droves” explains how women were having a hard time working with the men. There was a women by the name of Ana Redmond that was ready to change the world and well equipped to succeed in the tech field but left because of the hostile environment the men displayed. Sometimes having a male boss can be hard on women because they are looked down upon. The male boss might think the women is not good enough for the position so he passes it to another employee that is a male. This might be the reason for why women don’t take math and science courses because they don’t want to put up with men who might be sexiest. This is hurting the tech industry because it’s growing rapidly but not enough people are majoring into this field.
