1. Who is Holden Caulfield? Holden Caulfield, the main character of the book, used to attend at Pency School as he got kicked out due to his bad grades (out of five classes, he failed four). Indifferent about education, Caulfield believes it as unnecessary. So far Caulfield went to four schools, and he got kicked out by all schools because of a single reason: his academic incapability. Additionally, Caulfield plays fencing.

2. Where is Holden as he narrates the story? Holden narrates the story at the Thomson Hill, instead of at the big and the last football game of the season for Pency School.

Since maladjusted Holden could not get passing grades, despite the fact that the school already gave him a warning, Holden could not stay in the school anymore.

5. What “dirty trick” did Mr. Spencer play on Holden? Mr. Spencer puts “dirty trick”--according to Holden-- on Holden by asking him to bring Holden’s own essay and reading out loud to Holden. Holden’s essay discussed about Egyptians very briefly (2 paragraphs), since he did not care about history, did not attempt to learn about it, and ended up knowing nothing about Egyptians. At the end of the essay, Holden put a short note about how Mr. Spencer does not have to feel bad about giving Holden failing grade--which made Holden very embarrassed with Spencer’s “dirty trick.” At the same time, Holden evinced his guilt for neglecting his education temporarily.
