How does your culture affect how you view the world? Everyone is going to view the world differently, because we all have been through something that has affected us, for the good or for the bad. Culture majorly affects the way we perceive the world and the people around us, “as conditions change so do cultures; thus, cultures are considered to be dynamic… we all have unique identities that we develop within our cultures, but these identities are not fixed or static” (Trumbull and Pacheco, 9). Many feel as if they cannot live up to their own cultural fulfillment, others embrace just as much as others neglect their own culture.

In the short story “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, Jing - Mei and her mother were always having conflict, caused by the way they both perceived American culture. Here’s fresh eyes, first thoughts upon coming into the American culture, “They come out, blinking, into the bleached, forgetful sunshine, in Dodgers caps, and Rodeo T-shirts, with the maps their cousins have drawn for them and the images they’ve brought over from Cops and Terminator 2.”(Iyer, 50) When people visit the U.S.A for the first time, they think they are coming into the “Promise Land” but in all reality it’s just “Fast-talking, finger-snapping, palm-snapping jive artists straight from their TV screens shouting incomprehensible slogans about deals, destinations and drugs”.
