Which Emotion Stirs Your Soul? Motorcycling for some is defined by the style they choose. Which style of riding is the best? This analogy begins with two completely different styles, the Harley Davidson “Ultra Classic Electra Glide” a cruiser and a Ducati “848 Superbike”. As far as whether these two comparisons Ducati and Harley Davidson are rewarding to own on a daily basis, I would say they are both equally rewarding. The Harley offers a comfortable ride, with down low torque. The Ducati is far from a cruiser and in fact is all about speed and cornering. Ducati, the most advanced motorcycle in its category falls under the sport bike banner. The Harley Electra Glide is of a different breed and falls under the cruiser banner or touring model. Back in 1903, William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson presented the first production Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The bike was built to be a racer, with a 3-1/8 inch bore and 3-1/2 inch stroke. The factory in which they worked was a 10 x 15-foot wooden shed with the words "Harley-Davidson Motor Company" crudely scrawled on the door. This was where the dream of the American heritage began. During World War II, Harley made a major presence. When GI’s returned from the war, they were itching to ride bikes and most often, it was a Harley Davidson. On the other hand, known at first for its sporty line of lightweight single-cylinder bikes, Ducati hit its stride in the early 1970s with its V-Twin sport bikes that became the pinnacle of their era. Motorcycling has a history of attracting the "go-fast crowd," and those who wish to go the fastest look to sport bikes. These machines are designed for optimum speed, acceleration, braking and maneuverability. Sport bikes rely on aerodynamics more than Harleys because these are the bikes most often found competing on racetracks. It's made to have all the "hard parts" tucked up and out of the way. The Ducati simply handles incredibly; it is what this bike is made for. Even those who don’t ever plan on racing can experience the thrill of braking deep into a corner by attending track day at a local racetrack. Harley cruiser models are a bit different from the sport bike. They’re made primarily for comfort and long distant touring. You can soup up your V-twin and create extra speed and horsepower but still cannot compete with the superbike class. The handling of the Harley cruiser is a different feel. The bike is very heavy and the response in the corners is a bit challenging. But, if ridden as designed, its handling is fantastic on the open road. The one thing to always be aware of while riding is the cornering clearance. Touring bikes have what are called, floor boards. These are positioned with comfort in mind and placed on each side of the frame at the base of the motor. These footboards are actually longer and wider than your boot itself. When leaning through turns the rider needs to be careful not to lean too far or the low slung exhaust, kickstand, saddlebags or floorboards can scrape the ground. On the Ducati, this really isn't an
