Above all, it is important to note that the magical possibilities that Cheever describes in the story have become reality as technology has moved forward in unimaginable ways since 1953. The radio seen in the story could be replicated with modern technology by placing microphones in neighboring apartments and having the audio recording play back through any compatible radio. Not only has surveillance technology such as this broken away from the realm of fiction but also it also has continued to progress seemingly unseen.
