Have you ever felt left out of the American Dream? Langston Hughes felt this way. The American Dream is about opportunity. On the other hand, Walt Whitman was happy with America, or either he just talked about the great parts. Langston Hughes and Walt Whitman are both amazing writers and poets, they just have a different perspective on America. “ I Hear America Singing ,” by Walt Whitman, and “ Let America Be America Again ,” by Langston Hughes, have many similarities and differences. Both Whitman and Hughes wrote poems about America and the American Dream which is, opportunity. In Whitman's poem he has a list of different jobs. They’re all singing and celebrating because they are getting a better life in America. Whitman's poem is written in freeverse. Hughes was written in standard rhyme. That means that Whitman's does not rhyme. The themes are different also. Hughes theme is frustration over individuals who feel excluded. Whitman's “ I Hear America Singing,” is happy and joyful. On the other hand, Hughes poem “ Let America Be America Again,” is frustrated. The author feels left out of the American Dream, because everybody deserves to have an opportunity, but they’re not getting it. The purpose or the focus, for “ I Hear America Singing, “ is to celebrate workers or jobs. Whitman is celebrating the happy and joyful parts of American , while Hughes is talking about how certain people are being treated unequal or unfair. “ Let America Be America Again, “ is focused on how the different races, nationalities, and workers are not being treated equally. Almost everybody think that one race is superior. Hughes tone is more frustration because of not being treated fairly, and being left out of the American Dream.
