The film starts off on Saturday, March 24, 1984, Shermer High School, Chicago, IL, Detention 7AM. Five students are reprimanded to detention as punishment for things they did in school. The cast consists of Mr. Vernon, Brian, Claire, Allison, Andy and John Bender. Each student is viewed as The Princess, a basket case, a criminal, the brain and an athlete. All the students see each other differently and feel this is going to be a long day with people they never socialized with. Mr. Vernon asked the kids to write an essay on who they think they are. All the students looked at each kid forming their own opinion without really knowing who they really were. Mr. Vernon is the type of person that feels that he should automatically get respect but does not want to give it to the students. As Claire is being dropped off by her dad, all she wants is for him to get her out if it. Claire always gets her way not matter what she wants. Claire’s parents were going through a divorce and she would always play one parent against the other. Claire feels that her family is dysfunctional and everyone is in their own world. Claire was the “it” girl who would tease kids just to get respect in school and amongst her friends. Claire really hates going along with what her other friends do, but that’s what you have to do to be in their world. In the beginning all the other students feel that she is stuck up and conceded; lives a privilege life and does not know what hard times are.
