Bilbo starts his journey as a comfort-loving hobbit who was not keen on going on an adventure. However, he continues on the journey and begins to change. Goblins, Gollum, spiders, Wargs, wolves, a dragon, greed, and secrecy, are all evils Bilbo defeats on his quest. Bilbo beats the evils he encounters and progressively emerges as a new form of himself because of fate and luck. Bilbo accepts the ever-present help of luck but denies himself being a part of being a bigger picture and plan. “You dont really supose, do you, that all your adventures and escapes were managed by mere luck, just fore your sole benefit?” (Tolkien 305) This input of Gandalf makes Bilbo except his fate, that this adventure was meant to happen.
Fate and luck are the two forces that go hand in hand in aiding Bilbo in overcoming his descent into darkness. Each time Bilbo triumphs against a foe or a complication in the adventure he gains more respect from his fellow travellers and gains a little more confidence. With more respect and self-assurence, Bilbo takes more and more of the leadership role each day and helps Thorin’s company arrive to their destination.

This transformation was a progressive one. Bilbo had the Tookish side in him already. Metaphorically, Bilbo was in a cocoon. However, he had always lived life the Baggins way and started the adventure with a negative outlook. What made the chrysillis crack was Bilbo beating Gollum in the riddle game and escaping with the ring. The bursting of the cocoon were the events after.
