In the short story The Magic Bagel, the author Calvin Trillin uses literary devices to en- hance his writing and allow the reader to understand the false sense of hope the father feels when trying to relocate the precious bagel his eldest daughter has been longing for. This bagel essentially ties the family and writing together in such a manner, that one can truly see how a small, almost irrelevant object has the power to create a bond, unlike any other. Through his use of tone, diction, symbolism and setting, the author is highly successful in portraying the emo- tions of a father who misses his family.
