A soldier’s home, by Earnest Hemmingway is about a soldier who returns home from World War I, and does not fit in. The story follows how Harold Krebs is being reintroduced into society. The story tells that though Krebs is at home, he doesn’t feel at home. Hemmingway I believe tried to portray himself in Krebs. Like Krebs, Hemmingway went to war and returned, not feeling like himself and that he fit in the community. Because Krebs is forced to lie to the society around him so that he can be more accepted, his morals are tested. In the story, Krebs tries to isolate himself by staying in the house and staying away from reliegion.
Hemmingway engrained his personal life into Harold Krebs. Hemmingway told of his experiences coming home and what he experienced as a vetran returning from war. In 1919, Hemmingway had returned home just like Krebs had. According to friends and family, Hemmingway stuck out like a sore thumb, his PTSD and war wounds slowly eating away at him. Everyday, Kreb’s life gets complicated because when welcomed by society, people listend to the lies. The hardest lies that he had to tell was to his family because he was trying to be close to them. At breakfast one morning Krebs’ mother asks him, “Don’t you love your mother, dear boy?” Krebs then proceeds to tell the truth, “No…I don’t love anybody.” With is mother now crying, he immediately regrets telling his mother how he truly feels. He then lies to cover himself up and make his mother feel better. Krebs even feels the need to lie to his sister, who adores him like a role model. “‘Am I really your girl?’ ‘Sure’ ‘Do you love me?’ ‘Uh,huh.’ ‘Will you love me always?’ ‘Sure’.” Krebs is just answering to try and keep the family relationship smooth, without any problems.
