Standing there, 245 feet above water on the bridge between life and death. A person takes a run for it, launch themself over the bridge. The moment they leave the rail, it is an instant regret. It is too late, there is no going back, they are gone forever. Gone just like Hannah Baker, the girl from Liberty High School who killed herself in 13 Reasons Why. The novel by Jay Asher helps readers learn about Hannah’s suicide through a series of tapes made for her peers. Even though 13 Reasons Why can be educational about suicides, Jay Asher needs to talk about the mental health illnesses relating to one, how a it is not premeditated, and that others are not liable for the suicide.
In 13 Reasons Why, Hannah Baker planned her death. This seems to be unrealistic and does not show what people experience during suicidal thoughts. One can see that Hannah took a lot of thought into her suicide, considering the fact that she made 13 separate tapes, each for a different person.“The time that it took to make 13 separate narratives and weave them together in an elaborate and devious fashion would likely have defused the crisis” (Ackerman). It appears that she wants those around her to read her mind, and if they are unable to she blames them. Which leads to them becoming one of the reasons why Hannah committed suicide. But, the only person responsible for Hannah's death is herself and no one else. Few fail to realize that no one is responsible for a suicide other than the victim. “As someone ‘left behind’ by my father’s death by suicide, I have faced the truth that, no matter what anyone in my father’s life did to offer him support or to try to prevent him taking his life, he did make this choice” (Benton).
