The Pioneers, James Fenimore Cooper’s third novel, introduces the character of Natty Bumppo, woodsman, hunter, and celibate loner, and that of his Indian friend, Chingachgook, “the last of the Mohicans.” This would begin the series of The Leatherstocking Tales. The story takes place in Templeton on Christmas Eve 1793 to the fall of 1794. Near sunset, Judge Marmaduke Temple and his daughter, Elizabeth, are travelling to Templeton in a sleigh. Elizabeth is returning after years of furthering her education. On their journey, a deer pursued by hounds crosses their path and Judge Temple fires at the deer with his shotgun; however, the animal continues to flee until two more bullet wounds finally take him down. Natty Bumppo emerges from the scene,
