The Crucible written by Arthur Miller, is a play that was written during the cold war. This play was written as an allegory about the Red scare, which is a time in America where the communist party in Russia and other places was just starting. Many people in America were accused of being communist followers and were severely punished for things that they were not actually doing, just in the nature of Salem during the witch trials, in a protestant colony in 1692. When the Red scare was happening, Arthur Miller was accused of being a follower of communism for not revealing a list of people in order to a court. In the Crucible, John Proctor was accused of Witchcraft, and had an affair with one the girls who acted in the nature of they were possessed by magic. By the end of the play, John had revealed that he was wrong, and of his sins, which made him overall a Tragic Hero.
Initially you see that John Proctor was trying to stay away from the girls, when the trials began, but Abigail began in order to threaten in order to tell the everyone about the affair that she and John had with her. Abigail and her cousin, Elizabeth were the first in order to fall victim in order to the spells.
