Who Is John Proctor's Reputation In The Crucible

In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, people do unthinkable things to save their name and reputation from being tarnished. This book is full of characters that lie, steal and even die just to protect their good name. This book The Crucible is about the Salem Witch Trials in the late 1600s that ended up in over 20 deaths. Driven by the need for respect, Reverend Parris, John Proctor and Giles Corey, in Arthur Miller's The Crucible, do ominous things to keep their names clean of impotence. There were many people in this book that did unspeakable things but three of them stood out, Giles Corey, John Proctor and Reverend Parris these three men would do anything to save their name.

Giles Corey was an older man in Salem who was known to always be worried about his reputation. He would do anything to save his name and his family's name from the towns scorn. According to Arthur Miller, "...He would not answer aye or nay to his indictment...he stayed mute, and died a Christian under the law. And so his sons will have his

As far as most of the town knows John lust lived a good Christian life with his wife Elizabeth, but even before the trials we know that he was been lying to the town and has secretly been having an affair with Abigail Williams. So, he is already sinning to keep his good name and then the he gets charged as a witch and his reputation comes crashing down. Miller states, "Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life!...how may I live without my name."(Miller 143). This quote ties into this theme about The Crucible really well, this whole speech by Proctor is about how he has already given up so much of his respect that he would rather get hung in front of the town then sign his name stating that he had sinned. These people in The Crucible would rather keep their good name then have a good relationship with their wife or children a great example of that is Reverend
