La Jolla Playhouse’s Escape to Margaritaville was a well executed and beautiful musical that was able to grasp and maintain my attention throughout the entire performance and teleport me into the magnificent world of Margaritaville. The designer was able to utilize the proscenium stage in the Mandell Weiss Theatre and create a superficial set that served as a portal into the tropical paradise of Margaritaville. The actors displayed their polished abilities and were able to express the emotions of the characters as if it were their own emotions, making the musical more real and believable. The director was able to harmonize all the different scenes with perfect queues which create a cohesive musical and enhanced the fluidity of the musical. Each of the main characters fit the aforementioned characteristics. For example, Tammy touched upon her weight issues which is both personal and risky. Weight can be seen as a very controversial topic as society has created a certain figure a person should have and anything that deviates from that figure is considered too fat or too skinny. In this musical Tammy sings a song in which essentially serenades a hamburger she was forbidden to heat by her rude fiance. Not only does she talk about her weight, she makes fun of and. This part of the musical was extremely important as it tells the audience to accept themselves for who they are as Tammy has accepted her figure and consumes the hamburger. Tully had some unexpected moments as he somewhat deviated from the person he initially portrayed. In the volcano scene with Rachel he informed her on her fruitless endeavors to collect soil samples as the soil was high in sulfur and other compounds.
