The Star - Spangled Banner is an anthem that is known by almost every American. Although most everyone is familiar with the anthem itself, not many people are familiar with the life of the man who wrote it. So by choosing to write about Francis Scott Key, it is my goals to understand his life and delve more deeply into what may have inspired him the night that he composed the anthem that America has come to know, respect, and honor. Thankfully, this book was fairly easy to find, I was able to locate it using the green county library’s online catalogs. Oddly and sadly enough, “What so proudly we hailed” was the only biography to be written about Francis Scott Key in over 75 years, so my selections of books was narrowed down tremendously and it made my decision pretty simple. Fortunately for me, the author of this book is certainly a skilled writer of historical books and this book is no exception to that.

It mainly talks about his most famous life accomplishment, the writing to the star spangled banner. His love for words and poetry certainly took him far in life and it is what he is most known for today. Some other notable qualities that are also mentioned in the introduction include his passion for this country, his family, and his business of being a lawyer. Furthermore, it talks about Francis Scott Key’s reputation of being a friend of the slave and how he would often defend the in court. All of the great qualities that Francis Scott Key obtained have left quite an impression on me that I would maybe strive to achieve in my own life.
