Matthias Grunewald was a court artist for the archbishop. He was born in 1470, but there is no record of the exact date or time. Matthias worked as an architect and engineer, but we all know him today as a painter.

Very few of Matthias’ work survived but he is well known for his masterpiece, “The Isenheim Altarpiece”, 1515. The structure stands 9’ 91/2 x 10’ 9” and opens to reveal different scenes at The Unterlinden Museum, Colmar, France. He originally painted this for the monks of the Monastery of St. Anthony. This painting has 3 different scenes painted with oil on wood. The first state displays the crucifixion of Jesus. The predella is painted with a Lamentation of Christ.
