Through the Willian Shakespeare present a lot of dramatic foils. Romeo and Mercutio are a contrast to each other in many ways. While Romeo is passionate, falls in love quickly and consider love a serious subject, Mercutio is funny, makes Jokes about Romeo's feelings and the about how seriously he loves someone.
First, Mercutio is the best foil of Romeo before the Capulet party when Romeo told his dream to Mercutio and Romeo seems to have positive attitudes about his dream and he asks to Mercutio what he dreams last night. Mercutio responds : " Dreamers often lie". This means that Romeo believes in the dreams, but Mercutio doesn't cares to much about it.
Another example is after the Capulet party when Romeo says: " I'm worried we'll get there too early. I have a feeling this party tonight will be the start of something bad." It means that Romeo is very pessimistic on the things that will happen, but Mercutio is optimistic, wants to play with love, and do some jokes.
