Despite all the wealth seen throughout the book, Fitzgerald portrays the overwhelming desire of many Americans to gain wealth, ultimately leads to an unfulfilled life and even death of two key characters- Jay Gatsby and Myrtle Wilson. The more an individual desires for wealth ultimately can get him killed. Myrtle in the novel is seen, conveying a low opinion of others as she herself is living as a poor;“ "I told that boy about the ice..these people! You have to keep after them all the time"(F, 69-70).This quote indicates that Myrtle Wilson is trying to fit into the upper classed society but is rather is a woman who acts like snob just to look fancy in front of everyone. Myrtle also cheats on George Wilson just to be part of the upper class,but does eventually get killed by the Daisy, when Daisy runs her over with Gatsby’s yellow car. …show more content…
Similarly, Gatsby dies because of his unjust love and desire for Daisy, Gatsby had everything he ever wanted but he held on to those feelings he had for Daisy before the war. In the article,” All men are [not] created equal” by Claire Stocks, Stocks states that “In a country where, according to the Declaration of Independence, 'all men are created equal', Gatsby attempts to prove that anyone can achieve 'greatness’.Gatsby does eventually realise that it is not that simple, and money alone does not bring with the same social status as inherited wealth (2,Stocks ).” It takes Gatsby a long time to figure out that the becoming a different social class is an impossible dream. Thus money cant ultimately buy love,but rather the social class also plays a key
