Who Is Nick Carraway Selfish In The Great Gatsby

In 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote “The Great Gatsby” which follows the lives of a group of characters living in Long Island and is narrated by Nick Carraway. One of these characters, who happens to be the main focus of this narration, is Jay Gatsby. Jay Gatsby comes off as compassionate and humble. He is portrayed as a gorgeously wealthy young man living in West Egg. Nick’s narration of him shapes and molds the story. His graciously good deeds can be seen all throughout the story. Although through most of the story, Gatsby’s past is ignored and is only brought to attention for a minor fraction of the story. He is one of the greater characters of the novel. After conveying he wants daisy over, he replies with “I want to get the grass cut” on page 87. Even after wanting to do this for him, he brings up another topic. Gatsby wants nick to join his business on the side. He has a caring heart for nick because he is aware he does not make much money. Gatsby really wants nick to work alongside him, but even after much convincing, nick chooses to refuse this offer due to his hands “being too full” as quoted on page 88. Because he is not able to follow through with Nick on this, we see that Nick can rely on what Gatsby tells him. The next morning, a man sent by none other than Jay Gatsby himself shows up at Nick’s door. Just before their scheduled lunch, Gatsby comes over to check on his new friend. He wants to know if everything is going alright to which nick replies with by asking him to look at the lawn. Gatsby is clearly too tired to notice anything as he might be worried about this lunch with Daisy. The fact that gatsby did not notice the grass is not what matters.
