Isabel Allende’s “The Judge’s Wife” portrays the deprived and rugged life of a scoundrel, named Nicholas Vidal. Conceived in a brothel, Vidal only knew his mother, Juana the Forlorn. Despite his mother’s numerous abortion attempts, the boy miraculously survived. Unfortunately however, from the moment of his birth he was misshapen, having four nipples. From this sign his mother prophesied that a woman would be his downfall. In fear of his mother’s prediction, his face bore a doleful expression as he resided in isolation. Early in his childhood his face became permanently scarred from numerous knife fights. His innate ability for violence has shaped him into a reputable bandit, eventually leading an infamous gang of desperados. Despite Vidal’s criminal nature and tainted reputation, the author allows us to sympathize with his upbringing as a misshapen abortion survivor; presumably born in poverty without a father. Even though he is known as an outlaw, this makes Nicholas somewhat of an anti-hero. In addition to this, he also strongly juxtaposes another central character of the plot, Casilda. She is described as being pale and dainty, with eyes filled with wonder. Kind,sympathetic, and married to a man of law; she is the antithesis of Vidal. In spite of their differences, Casilda would be the one to “melt” his hardened heart, which allowed him to escape justice in the past.
