The Taming of the Shrew is a Shakespearean comedy written early in his playwright years. This play is about two men who are on a quest to marry two Minola sisters, Katherine and Bianca. These sisters are foils as Bianca is sweet and obedient, while Katherine is described as a shrew. Everyone liked Bianca more than Katherine, including their father Baptista. “What will you not suffer me? Nay, now I see she is your treasure, she must have a husband, I must walk barefoot on her wedding day and, for your love to her, lead apes in hell. Talk not to me. I will go sit and weep till I can find occasion of revenge.” (II.i.34-39) Many men are interested in marrying Bianca, but no one wants to marry Katherine the shrew. It is ironic because Petruchio says that he will fight fire with fire and use his fiery side to tame the fiery shrew Katherine. After Katherine is forced to marry him, he changes at the hands of Katherine and is eventually tamed himself. Katherine ends up using the same techniques that Petruchio used in his attempt to tame her. She fights fire with fire, and she also smartly uses reverse psychology on Petruchio. A wife at this time was required to be obedient to her husband and Katherine was anything but during the beginning of her marriage to Petruchio. However she learns to stop resisting and go along with what her husband says. It appears to everyone that Petruchio has tamed her. “Now fair befall thee, good Petruchio!... Her new-built virtue and obedience.” (V.ii.124-131) However, it is really the other way around as Katherine is not truly as she appears.
