The south has always been a poor, agrarian society. On the other hand, the north is the thriving part of the country that is making money off the manufacturing of goods. Slavery was a key factor of the south and the north wanted to abolish it. Slavery was key to the southern society because their land was mostly lush and used for farming. The civil war started over this issue of slavery, yet the north had more money and power. This power and wealth allowed for the north to be victorious over the south leaving it in complete destruction and despair. In my opinion, the most disturbing situations in his short stories come from Emily Grierson. She is probably one of the most flawed characters, and this is especially portrayed when Faulkner writes, “What was left of him, rotted beneath what was left of the nightshirt, had become inextricable from the bed”(59). He also writes that a “ long strand of iron-gray hair”(59) was left behind on the pillow. This depicts that Emily Grierson let the body decay in her own house for a long time. It could also be interpreted that Emily was having sexual attractions to a dead man. This depiction of the character in this story completely portrays Faulkner's style of using the most strange, disturbing characters.
This thesis portrays Faulkner as a man who shows how the south has been affected by war and the differences of the culture. Many comments regarding Southern Gothic reflect society’s negatives or weaknesses to point out truths of America’s southern culture.
