Who Is Responsible for Macbeth’s Downfall?
Does raw ambition coupled with a weak character spell disaster? It’s fine to have a driving ambition but in the end we are held responsible for how we go about achieving it. The unfortunate thing is that when a person does not have strength of character, then it can happen that ambition led astray by bad influences can cause his downfall. When Macbeth’s raw ambition clashes with his self-doubt and weak character, he is spurred to murderous actions that doom him. Macbeth was ultimately responsible for his downfall because he put achieving his ambition above everything. Thus he wanted to believe the witches and allowed Lady Macbeth to manipulate him. All of his actions chipped away at his moral character and caused his tragic downfall.

“Still it cried, ‘Sleep no more!’ to all the house. / “Glamis hath murdered sleep, and therefore Cawdor / Shall sleep no more. Macbeth shall sleep no more.” (2.2.41-43) In this quote, Macbeth thought he heard a voice cry :”Sleep no more!” Macbeth can’t sleep and is bothered by voices in the dark. Macbeth should have realized it was his conscious telling him to stop murdering, but he chose not to stop. “Thou art too like the spirit of Banquo. Down! / … Horrible sight! Now I see ’tis true; / For the blood-boltered Banquo smiles upon me / And points at them for his. / Thy crown does sear mine eyeballs.” (4.1.117-118, 127-129) In this quote, the witches show Macbeth the apparition of the ghost of Banquo following 8 kings in a row who represent Banquo’s descendents.
