The Life of Whoopi Goldberg In a big city in New York lived a troubled young woman who had great dreams. This woman is Whoopi Goldberg, who is now a well-known star. Although her childhood was not so great, that did not stop her from becoming who she is today. She was born in New York City, led a troubled life, and later became a famous comedian, and actress.
Whoopi was born on November 13, 1955 in New York City. Whoopi’s father was Robert Johnson, and her mother was Emma Johnson. Whoopi’s father was a preacher, and her mother was a nurse and a teacher. While Whoopi was looking for a job, she stumbled upon the San Diego Repertory Theatre and joined an improvisational group named Spontaneous Combustion (“Whoopi Goldberg”). She developed her stage name, Whoopi Goldberg, at this very theatre. Whoopi later joined another group called the Blake Street Hawkeyes. She soon developed her own show named, The Spook Show. She took her show and toured all over America and Europe. She then took this show to the New York Dance Theatre Workshop, where she got noticed. At the New York Dance Theatre Workshop, in New York City, she began developing her comedic skills. After a show one night, a director named Mike Nichols, offered to be her producer (Adams pg. 29-30). After this success on Broadway, Whoopi played a role in The Color Purple, and her performance earned her two awards, a Golden Globe, and an Image Award from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, also known as the NAACP. "Goldberg's success with The Color Purple launched a highly visible acting career. Since 1985, she has appeared in over 80 film and television productions" ("Whoopi Goldberg "). Some of the films she's starred in are Jumpin' Jack Flash, Clara's Heart, Ghost, Sister Act, The Player, and many more.
