For over a decade, there has been a ongoing argument about how people should be allowed to carry firearms inside higher education academic buildings. Majority of the 4,400 colleges and universities in the U.S. prohibit the carrying of firearms on their campuses and most people agree that this has had a positive effect on the safety in and outside the classrooms. However, I firmly disagree. I believe that we should have the right to have a concealed firearm while on campus. Allowing handguns on a college campus does sound frightening, but responsible citizens should have the right to protect themselves against criminals. In 2009, college campuses across the United States were accounted for 17 murders, 2590 forcible sex offenses, 1865 robberies, and 2675 aggravated assaults. Imagine if those people who were effected had a handgun on them at the time of these certain violent crimes? Don’t you think those numbers would have gone down? There are 26 colleges that currently allow students, faculty, and visitors to carry a handgun on campus with a permit. I feel like professors, students that have classes at night, or anyone who already has a license to carry a concealed handgun SHOULD be allowed to carry a handgun wherever they might be. After all, under current law, armed people can carry a concealed weapon into literally thousands of places throughout their state, including movie theaters, restaurants, malls, and churches, and have done so responsibly for years. Most state laws require a FBI criminal background check, fingerprints, classroom instruction and live-fire certification. Prohibiting concealed carry on a college campus doesn’t make sense to me considering that most states, including Texas, already have an existing right towards this
