Why Americanism Is Important To Me

Teddy Roosevelt once said, “Americanism means the virtues of courage, honor, justice, truth, sincerity, and hardihood-the virtues that made America.” Even though these words were spoken more than 100 years ago, they still mean a lot today. America was founded on these ideas and principles, and these ideas are still what makes America great today.

In my lifetime, I have seen many acts of terrorism against our country. I’ve heard people doubt our country’s principles, our safety, our president’s leadership, and the values which our country stands for. I have grown up in a time where our safety is checked at airports, at ballgames, and even at schools. I believe if we go back to the principles Teddy Roosevelt talks about we will be just as patriotic as we once were. At school, we are taught to be leaders and not followers just like Teddy Roosevelt lead in a patriotic way. We are taught at a very young age the Pledge of Allegiance to understand the value of being an American. If something bad happens to our country, our people have a special way of uniting and standing together as one country. It is in times of prosperity that we also need to remember the words that we recite during the Pledge of Allegiance and live those words every day of our lives.

My grandpa is a veteran. He served our great country in the Vietnam War. Even though he doesn’t like to share much from his time there in Vietnam, I can say that we need to appreciate everything our veterans and soldiers do for us. The sacrifice they and their families make is something that should never go unnoticed. They are living examples of Teddy Roosevelt’s words. I am proud of my grandpa because he did something the average human wouldn’t even think about doing. He valued this country enough to risk his life for
