Why Did John Proctor Change In The Crucible

I would recreate the ending when John Proctor refuses to lie in order to save himself. While Elizabeth is found guilty of witchcraft and hung. I changed the plot in Act IV when John refuses to give up any of his friends to save himself. In my version John Proctor is selfish and signs his name away to Judge Hathorne along with Danforth to repent his sins . His wife Elizabeth is hung and found guilty of sending her spirit out to kill Abigail. After the Salem Witch Trials, he marries Abigail and they have children together. This would change the story because instead of John holding onto his name not signing the confession to teach his sons to never sell out his friends, he saved himself, and I think this would of made him less respected in …show more content…
Proctor was accused of witchcraft and hung for his crimes. In the Crucible, Miller changed this because he liked him. I think that is why Miller had Proctor make an impact to the story as him being a respected person that the people of Salem looked up to. In real life and the play Proctor was hung,but for two different reasons that made him the savior to their community in the play versus real life where he was just another person that was accused and died. If Miller had used that Proctor was not the respected person like he was in the play, then I don’t think his death would’ve made an impact to the people of Salem and the story. The people would not have been really angry at the high court and revolt against them because he would be another name on the list that was accused or his name hold any meaning to the community. Goody Putnam in the play accuses Rebecca Nurse of killing her seven infant children due to her being jealous of her. In real life Goody Putnam was ‘possessed’ and was one of the accusers. Also there were some adults along with children that accused others of consorting with the Devil. If Miller decided to use this piece of evidence then there would’ve been a lot of more bloodshed because and other important adults were highly respected and their word would’ve held more weight in the town and
