Why Did Massachusetts 54th Originate

The origin of massachusetts 54th was authorized in march 1863 by john andrew. It was the first military to have black soldiers. Massachusetts was the first to respond with the formation of the 54th regiment. According to massachusetts history society John felt that black men were capable of leadership. So the governor paraded through the streets of boston.

The obstacles blacks had to face is segregation during that time. Union officers believed that blacks were not as skilled or brave as the whites. They just thought that the blacks can just be cooks, carpenters and etc.. Black soldiers were in big danger if they were captured in the battle. According to History.com the blacks were paid $3 less than the whites during the war.

According to History.com When Shaw got shot they buried his body with the black soldiers that were also killed in the battle. Also shaw´s parents were happy that he was buried with the black soldiers. The reason the parents felt that way is because they felt that the soldiers were brave and dedicated towards the battle. So it made everybody have a different look towards the blacks and made the blacks became heroes of this battle. The blacks proved people wrong that they can be as much as part of this battle as anyone else and they did.

The proclamation ended up changing a lot and helping the blacks in the war. It made the slaves more happy to be free. The african americans felt good to fight in the war. According to History.com the african americans changed the shape of the war because they showed
