The Shimabara Rebellion occurred during the Tokugawa Shogunate. There had been many small uprisings around the region; however this one would escalate to a huge scale which in turn makes it famous. The previous Daimyo of the region, Matsukura Shigemasa increased taxes around the board to help finance some of his construction projects; however this increase in taxes would anger not only the farmers, but also ronin as well. Before this time, there had been missionaries from across Europe that came over to Japan to try and convert some to Christianity. When Matsukura announced that he would also not allow the religion of Christianity to continue, that was the last straw for the farmers and ronin. Matsukura Katsuie would continue these policies,
