Kamikaze Pilots The Kamikazes weren't a force till the Japanese knew that you could cause a lot of damage by crashing planes. Kamikazes were the suicide pilots who ended their lives in a very sad way, but for them they believed it was best for them. Kamikazes main focuses were hitting and threatening enemies during wars or battles. Why would Kamikazes want to end their lives in such a way? What benefited them for doing this? Most Kamikazes missed their main targets during battle. It is said that 14% to 19% of Kamikaze pilots missed their targets while in battle. Many were shot down by enemies before they could get close enough to hit them and take down their ships or battlefield. Some missed shots were mistakes by pilots called pilot's error which made the plane go wrong and crash. The word Kamikaze means divine wind after a typhoon hit two 13th centuries. Most Kamikaze pilots were only teenagers or young adults when they volunteered to fly their plane into a battleship. Teenagers only had a few days of training just to learn the basics of flying an aircraft and so they wouldn’t end up making a mistake that would cause their aircraft to stall and end up crashing somewhere that didn’t matter. The very first Kamikaze attacks were by the Pacific Ocean where most Kamikazes were near. The war took place in Leyte which is an island located in the Philippines. Kamikazes believed that sacrificing their lives for their country was the right thing to do according to their religion and they believed that their “god” or person that they praise will worship them once they pass away. Many men wrote goodbye letters telling them to celebrate the opportunity they were given to
