A social influence is an effect on an individual which is part of the social environment. They can range from family, peer groups and mass media to the norms and roles society places on an individual.
Family shapes beliefs, values and expectations and teaches a child to behave properly, how to relate to others and how to act and react in ways that are culturally suitable. If at an early stage the child experiences appropriate attachment, they will become resilient and will have a positive self image which will allow them to not feel as though they need to conform with others later on in their lives. This could be an argument for why those receiving care should be given choices as for example an adult who has suffered from loss may wish to continue to socialise with their existing peer group because they may feel as though it would be easier for them to talk openly about what has happened to them and may feel that they will get more comfort out of socialisation with their existing peer group. Therefore the individual should be given choices about the care they receive so that they will be able to meet up with their peer group as regularly as is necessary. Furthermore, if an individual has to make a decision about what care they wish to receive they may be reluctant to choose specific options such as going to a therapist as they might be scared of what their friends will think. Therefore, due to people in society being quick to judge the individual may not make the right choice as they may have low self -esteem as a result of their friend’s negative attitudes towards the care
