In the short story "The Cask of Amontillado," Edgar Allan Poe writes in first person from the perspective of Montresor, the narrator of this tale who vows revenge against Fortunato. Montresor whom began to develop the perfect plan for retribution.Consequently Poe uses verbal,dramatic,and situational irony to show Montresor misfortunes throughout the story which plays a vital role. Frist one example of verbal irony can be seen when Montresor first sees Fortunato he says “My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met,”.(pg 237)This statement is a type of verbal irony because Fortunato is not actually luckily met by Montresor, whose intentions are to murder Fortunato. verbal irony combine when Montresor and Fortunato begin the journey into the catacombs to search for the Amontillado.As Fortunato coughs, Montresor expresses concern and suggests they turn back, which Fortunato replies.'Enough," he said; 'the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me.I shall not die of a cough.”(pg 238) from this we recall that Montresor's goal is to immolate,and to sacrifice Fortunato, as the tension between Fortunato's false sense of security, on one hand, and the immolation awaiting Montresor. Montresor’s hypocrisy shows by taking advantage of Fortunato’s weakness and lying to him.and after carrying out the crime, Montresor describes his heart as growing sick, but it is because of the "dampness of the catacombs." Rather than fret about the murder he has just committed, he is worried about what is going to happen to the weather
