The impact of Harm de Blij's book, "Why Geography Matters: More Than Ever," was eye-opening. I learned things about the true importance and value of geography in our everyday lives. Blij wrote this book to teach readers about geography, so they can have appropriate responses to the everyday events in our lives. He also wrote it to make the readers more aware and ready for the world's future challenges ahead. He hoped this book would teach people more about something he values that is rarely taught in American schools. All in all, Harm de Blij did an exceptional job of demonstrating the value of the study of geography, by including real-world examples, several diagrams, and graphs, but without the resources at most American schools, it will be difficult …show more content…
We need to not only understand the geography of our own countries but understand the economic, cultural, political, and environmental aspects of other countries to prevent conflicts and problems. Countries rely on each other's resources through trading. As indicated on pages 218 and 219, China and America have a crucial relationship when it comes to trading. China is one of the top exporters in the world and the U.S is one of the top importers of those goods. But, America has a restricted domestic supply of these nonrenewable resources China has a sufficient amount of. As time goes on, China and America's trading relationship could weaken causing problems, especially because the United States is constantly surprised about the simple geography facts about China, one of their largest trading partners. Most American citizens know nothing about the climate, leaders, or way of life in China. The U.S. not only needs to understand their country, but they need to have a better understanding of China as well. Relationships with other countries can be difficult, but you have to prepare your own countries to deal with the issues when they're
