Why High School Should Start Later

Many students go to bed late doing their homework, wake up earlier than their parents, go through a whole school day as well as their sports practices, go home, and repeat their whole schedule every day. Students who have such busy plans need an adequate amount of sleep each night to give them energy throughout the day. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that students who are thirteen to eighteen years old should get eight to ten hours of sleep regularly (Hicks). Unfortunately, according to the Centers of Disease Control, about seventy percent of high schoolers say that they get seven hours of sleep or less (Hicks). Their shortened sleep hours are a result of the school day starting too early in the morning. The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention found that, “In more than 40 states, at least 75 percent of public schools start earlier than 8:30 a.m.” (Richmond). Students have …show more content…
Many students don’t get their required sleep hours because of how early in the morning their school starts. However, an easy solution to this critical problem is to start school later in the morning. Due to how early students start their day, they can suffer from chronic sleep deprivation, a problem that teenagers should not have so early in life. Their lack of sleep can cause poor performance on academics which are extremely important during school careers. Finally, since school hours are terribly early, the hours of sleep teens acquire can be detrimental to their health and cause depression. Students shouldn’t have to deal with such problems, but those can be eradicated if school boards took later starting times into consideration. Starting off the school day later can be tremendously beneficial to the student body and even the teachers of the schools.
