The taste of chili pungency is actually not a type of taste but a kind of pain. However, chili pepper as one of the most common ingredients, are used by lots of families and restaurants. And chili related products, such as the hot chili sauce, are sold in the markets all around the world. How come chili gets so popular all over the world if it causes pain? People largely consume chili because it is addictive due to the cultural reason and chemical reason, but it is not a bad thing because chili is actually beneficial for human body.
Chili consumption has played an important role in the food culture during long human history. Long time ago, since the ancient time, people were consuming chili as an important ingredient. And the relationship lasts for thousands of years till now. Thus, it had becoming a habit or tradition of people consuming chili in certain areas. Moreover, people were captivated by chili because of its special taste. Adam (2012) argues that, “Not only does chili spice add heat and flavor, it keeps food from spoiling.” At that time, there was no refrigerator, and the food would easily go bad, especially meat. People found that if they eat the meat which has already been spoiled with chili, it does not taste so bad; because the chili paper seems to release a strong taste that can cover the other tastes. On the other hand, people do not just enjoy the spicy taste of chili; there are also other cultural reasons that make people cherish chili.
