Why Is Crito Trying To Get Socrates

The dialogue that we read was a conversation between Socrates and Crito. The entire dialogue is about Crito trying to get Socrates to escape out of jail because of many reasons. Crito starts his persuasion off with stating the very obvious. He makes sure that Socrates knows that if he does not escape in the night then he will have to end his own life the next day. The main reason Crito is trying to get Socrates to escape is because not only will Crito lose one of his best friends but it will look like Crito let down Socrates. The public opinion will think that Crito did not try hard enough to get Socrates out of jail and therefore Crito will be looked down on. Socrates brings a lot more explanations in his argument and that helps him out a lot. I see where Crito is coming from because he does not want to lose a friend of his and he wants Socrates children to have their dad to raise them. The main reason Socrates has the stronger argument is because he is looking towards the future while Crito is looking at the present. When you have a big issue you have to look towards the future and not just want the present has to hold. If he was to escape it would be fine that night or even that week, but he could never come back to the place he was raised and he wants his children to be able to have education and to be raised in the correct way. Socrates seems like an honorable man and with that being said he does not want to break principles that he was raised on. He believes morals and ethics are more important than what his friend thinks he “should” do. While they both brought good arguments, Socrates was stronger and more information and explanation was put into his answers. If Crito would have had more facts instead of if’s and maybe’s than he would have had the stronger argument. I agree with Socrates on this
