Often times in life, humans do not realize how big of an impact others have have on who we become and the choices we make which ultimately determines the course of our lives. In William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, two young people from enemy families fall in love. Though this relationship is forbidden, the devotion of these two lovers is stronger than anything their families could do. Minor characters like Friar Lawrence play very important roles in this play and impact the decisions that Romeo and Juliet, the two major characters, make which eventually leads to the play’s tragic ending.
Friar Lawrence’s important can be seen early in this play. In Act 2, Romeo goes to tell Friar that he isn’t in love with Rosaline anymore because he has found someone new. Friar tells Romeo that “young

Juliet’s spirit is crushed after romeo is banished and she goes to Friar desperate for guidance. He sees that she too is desperate enough to go to any measures to see Romeo again or at least not have to suffer from so much grief. In Act 4 Scene 1, Friar comes up with a plan for them to be together again in which Juliet will fake her death, Friar will send letters to Romeo, and they will both be there when she awakens. Friar Lawrence’s efforts to get them back together are extremely important to the play because it most likely prevented Juliet from killing herself right then which would’ve affected the overall conclusion of the play. Also in Act 4, Friar goes along with the fake death of juliet and even attends the obsequy (4.5.65-83). Friar following through with the plan keeps the Capulet family from being suspicious of Juliet’s spontaneous death. Had romeo gotten the letters, he would’ve been able to be with Juliet again, all because of Friar Lawrence.
