The main character Hamlet in Shakespeare’s Hamlet toys with many different and confusing emotions. Many questions what is going on inside his head. The common question asked though is whether Hamlet is sane or not. This can go both ways but many see that he is a sane person that is just filled with revenge. Hamlet’s sanity is shown at the beginning when speaking with Horatio and Marcellus, then again with his love for Ophelia, and again when he wants a second opinion of Claudius’s guilt. In the beginning of the play Hamlet speaks with the ghost of his late father. They speak about his father’s death and who had killed his father. Hamlet wants to seek revenge for his death. The actions of the characters in the play and them all clamming that he is mad, led to people saying that he was indeed sane. Not only does Polonius clam that Hamlet is a mad man but also does Ophelia and the Queen. These head characters say that he is mad but it is not the other characters that should be looked at it is Hamlet. And when Hamlet is looked at the result is that he indeed sane. There is also the confusion of why Hamlet treats his love Ophelia so poorly but the thing is that love itself is confusing. When he tells Horatio and Marcellus to not speak of the ghost shows that he is taking the time to make sure his plan would not get out. Then with his treatment of Ophelia proves that he was just confused and had a lot to deal with but also that love is acted upon by the heart not the mind. Then finally when Hamlet must have a second opinion on deciding if Claudius indeed kill his father shows that he was not insane because he wanted justification.
