If religion is all about the belief and worship of a personal Lord or God, humanism is a cultural and intellectual movement of the renaissance that emphasized human potential to attain excellence and promoted direct study of the literature, art, and civilization of classical Greece and Rome. Although the idea of humanism had been spread rapidly since 1350-1400, there are several topics relevant to our today’s society that need discussing. Therefore, the history of humanism and how importance understanding humanities is will also be studied.
Throughout the Middle Ages, man’s place in the universe was considered as one of obedience. People were expected to live their lives to worship God, and they were asked by the church to earn their way into heaven by following the …show more content…
However, during the Classical period (480-323 BCE), the Greeks started to ask questions and seek answers about the world around them, which had never been seen in any other cultures before. Also, the idea of human’s capacity to understand and control themselves in term of society was also grown among the Greeks. In the fourteenth century as known as the start of Renaissance period, many European intellectuals began to question the religious and the after-life ideas as well as developed new attitudes about themselves and the world. So, humanism was said to be the reason lead to Renaissance. Humanism changed the way people think about themselves in their lives; instead of spending their whole lives to focus on either heaven or hell and religion, humanism was an idea that made people focus on themselves and their lives in this world. One of the most important concept that humanists introduced to society was individualism, which is an emphasis of the dignity and the worth of the individual person.
