Sesame Street Sesame Street originated in the 1960”s as a television show for children called, “ Television for Preschool Children.” It was the first television based educational programing and continues to set the standard for educational shows like it such as Reading Rainbow and Barney and Friends. When Sesame Street was created it was first designed as an experiment to test the functionality of television as an educational tool. For this reason, several government agencies and other foundations generously funded it. Sesame Street debuted in 1969. The premise of the show was different from today’s version. The reason for this is because the human adult characters tended to engage in tedious diolque scenes. To eliminate this problem the show eventually decided to combine it’s reality and fantasy elements. Therefore characters like Oscar the Grouch and Big Bird became permanent street residents and would regularly interact with the multicultural human cast. As a result of the cast being multicultural the show was banned in several states. Conquering this, the show went on to do more than teach the basics of language and numbers. Overseas in Bangladesh, four-year olds who watch the local version of Sesame Street have literacy scores that are 67 percent higher than those who don’t watch. And in Indonesia, children who frequently watch the local version of Sesame Street have 15 percent higher scores on early cognitive skills than children who don’t watch. For more than 40 years Sesame Street have had major impacts on children’s learning across the
