After the Civil War, it was time for America to put itself back together. The nation as a whole needed to do something about the newly emancipated slaves; the nation needed to formally establish the abolishment of slavery. The Reconstruction Amendments, the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments, were added to the United States Constitution, establishing civil and legal protection for former slaves. Altogether though, these amendments were not very effective. The thirteenth amendment did indeed eliminate slavery, but the South created the Black Codes, restricting African American’s freedom and forcing them to limited amounts of work for low wages.
