As the emptyheaded audience in Peters Weir’s film The Truman Show, obliviously gapes at the life of Truman Burbank, they quickly become immune to the immorality of the show writes Emily Green.
Ever met those people who are OTT, everything has to be perfect that they end up controlling other’s lives? It’s a horrible feeling to be controlled, but what if you were controlled and filmed your whole life and you didn’t even know it? Peter Weir’s by standing audience is a depiction of society’s inability to see immorality as we are so consumed by the world around us.
Christof, the show’s director, has successfully implanted the contagious disease of immorality in the addicted minds of his audience. They devote/dedicate themselves to the Truman Show almost 24/7. Even though they aren’t directly controlling

Similar to bullying, if we are witnesses of the act and don’t report to authority we become just as bad as the bullies themselves. Just by watching ‘The Truman Show’ the audience becomes unaware of their silent support for Christof’s motives/intentions. Thanks to Christof’s efforts, they get their daily dose of ‘The Truman Show’ which has become a budding obsession, resulting in the inoculation of the disease in their lives. Oblivious to the evils or their viewing habits the audience indulge themselves in mindless acceptance of this immoral behaviour. Due to their severe contamination of the disease, they become incapable to see Truman as a real human being, but rather a commodity. This inability is especially seen in the final scene when Truman is fighting against the sea and the plague of immorality which has infected Christof. Fans in the bar, watching these events unfold take keen interest in placing bets on survival. They value their own entertainment over Truman’s life. Although they are completely unaware of it
