Why Students Start Later In High School

School starts extremely far too early. School starting at 7:30 AM profusely hinders my learning. If school started at a more reasonable time most students would come on time. Students in high school need lots of sleep. We are growing and our minds are still developing. Most high schoolers are also working part time jobs. A typical student might get off of work at 11:00 PM and by the time they are home and ready to do homework or even eat dinner they would be half asleep drowsy and nodding off. This causes me to fall behind in class. Also, when students don't get sleep the night before school, they often fall asleep in most of their first couple classes of the day.

For students that work jobs after school, having to be at school before 7:30 is tremendously stressful. Students will start work at 5:00 PM and get off at 11:00 PM and get to sleep by 12:30 or 1 in the morning. Most of the time on the days after they work they wake up late sometimes at 6:45 AM. This means they at most are getting 6 hours of sleep. When students wake up they feel drowsy all day and the cycle just repeats. This can drop students grades. When a student falls asleep in class it is often hard for them to catch up to the lesson the rest of the class is on. They wake up confused on the subject. Most students just give up until the next period. This happens at least 4 times every period. Most students will just accept that they did bad and missed out on the assignments not knowing there is always a way to catch up on their missed work.
