Two months after Texas joined the U.S., Texas was engaged in a bloody battle.Texas joined the confederate states, after the U.S replaced its governor, Sam Houston. A anti-slavery man named Abraham Lincoln was elected president, by this time southerners rebelled and six southern states left the union to form the confederate states of America. The reasons Texans fought were to preserve slavery, have state rights and to show their love for Texas. The most important reason why Texas fought was to preserve slaves. 29% of white texans owned slaves and 71% did not own slaves.The Texans with non-slave were probably not as wealthy to own a slave, so they would want to fight for the south..Abolitionists denunciation of slavery as immoral and southern defense of slavery as a positive good.Slavery received the support of most non-slaveholding Texans, as well as slaveholders, because it provided controlling labor.
